Mandrake

Mandragora officinarum

Root shaped like a person. Said to scream when pulled. Modern literature has not improved on this.

Mandragora officinarum contains tropane alkaloids. It was used for two thousand years as a surgical anesthetic and a hallucinogen before either word existed. The medieval superstition that it shrieks when uprooted was probably good harm reduction.
