Belladonna

Atropa belladonna means “beautiful woman.” Renaissance Italian women dropped its extract into their eyes to widen the pupils, which was considered attractive and is, separately, an early symptom of poisoning. The same plant that made you prettier could stop your heart at a higher dose. The name is a compliment and a warning in the same breath.
