Coprinus comatus emerges looking like a tall, shaggy white pillar and does not stay that way for long. Within hours of maturing, or of being picked, it begins to deliquesce: it digests itself into a pool of black, spore-filled ink. It is one of the few organisms that treats self-destruction as a reproductive strategy. A brief life, vividly concluded.
